Empowering nurses and midwives through research: A structured internship approach

8:00 AM - 8:40 AM

Abstract

Nursing and midwifery research is essential for advancing evidence-based practice, improving patient outcomes, and driving clinical innovation. However, many nurse leaders whose roles include research often lack the dedicated time, knowledge, or skills to undertake meaningful research. Addressing these barriers is crucial to fostering a culture of inquiry and continuous improvement in healthcare.

The Nursing and Midwifery Research Internship Program was developed to build research capacity within our Local Health District, supported by NSW Health Nursing and Midwifery Strategy Reserve 2023-25 funding. Participants are supported with one day per fortnight dedicated to their research projects and learning. The scoping phase (February - June 2024) involved a literature review, needs assessment, and stakeholder engagement. Surveys with 18 research-active nurses and midwives, along with consultations with academic and clinical partners, identified knowledge and skill gaps. Mapping existing resources ensured the program built on current strengths.

The structured program comprises three modules: conceptualising the study, planning and conducting research, and disseminating findings. Delivered through interactive workshops, guided readings, and mentorship, it equips participants with practical skills to transform clinical problems into research questions, navigate governance processes, and conduct research. A robust evaluation strategy will assess program effectiveness. In February 2025, five interns commenced the 12-month pilot program with tailored mentorship and resources. While the initial cohort is small due to resource constraints, future sustainability will be explored through partnerships with academic and healthcare organisations.

This initiative provides a vital pathway for nurses and midwives to develop research capability, strengthening clinician-academic collaboration, fostering professional growth, and enhancing patient-centred care. By equipping nurses and midwives with the tools to lead practice-based research, the program empowers them to drive meaningful change and innovation in healthcare.
