Navigating Complexity: Empowering Nursing Leadership with Real-Time Informatics Tools
12:25 PM - 12:45 PMAbstract
In today’s fast-paced healthcare environment, nursing leaders require real-time, data-driven insights to enhance patient safety, streamline workflows, and drive informed decision-making. This session explores the journey of developing, implementing, and embedding the RMH Nursing Leadership Dashboard, an innovative tool designed to empower shift-leading nurses with essential, real-time information.
Our journey revealed the intricate and dynamic nature of hospital ecosystems, where diverse structures, competing priorities, and varying mindsets intersect. To address these complexities, we adopted a Human-Centered Systems Thinking approach, integrating the analytical strengths of systems thinking with the creative problem-solving of design thinking. This methodology ensured that the dashboard was not just a technical solution but a meaningful, user-driven tool that meets the practical needs of nursing leaders while aligning with broader hospital goals.
Key design considerations included:
• Prioritising critical patient safety, ward risk, and workflow data for real-time decision-making.
• Ensuring seamless integration with hospital-wide dashboards and reporting structures and priorities.
• Implementing an agile, iterative design process that rapidly adapts based on frontline feedback and organisational requirements.
Since its introduction, the dashboard has significantly improved compliance, efficiency, and engagement. However, initial adoption challenges highlighted the need for a strategic training approach. Through "Informed Nursing Leadership" workshops, we embedded the dashboard into daily leadership practices, reinforcing a culture of data-driven decision-making at the ward level.
This session will provide insights into the principles of designing effective informatics tools, fostering engagement, and overcoming adoption challenges, offering practical strategies for nursing leaders aiming to implement real-time digital analytics solutions in complex healthcare environments.
