Empowering Advanced Practice Nurses: Development of a Practice Capability Framework
12:35 PM - 12:55 PMAbstract
Introduction:
Prostate cancer specialist nurses (PCSNs) play a crucial role in the care of men diagnosed with prostate cancer and their families. However, the survivorship experiences are often described by men with prostate cancer and their families as uncoordinated, medically focused and under-resourced, leading to increased anxiety and poor outcomes. This study aimed to develop a Practice and Capability Framework to support PCSNs in delivering high-quality, person-centred care with a focus on quality and compassionate survivorship care.
Methods:
A real-time Delphi method was employed to gather expert opinions and evidence. This online approach facilitated the collection of data from over 70 experts, overcoming geographical and time constraints, and ensuring an equal flow of information among participants.
Results:
The Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse Practice and Capability Framework 2023 was developed, incorporating four domains with corresponding capability statements and performance criteria. The framework emphasises survivorship care, reflecting its importance as highlighted by the expert responses. It aims to guide professional development, promote quality survivorship care, and inform contemporary practice in the field of prostate cancer nursing. The framework also underscores the importance of fostering strong connections and demonstrating compassion in patient care.
Conclusion:
The newly developed framework provides PCSNs with a structured and evidence-based guide to enhance their practice, ultimately improving care and outcomes for men with prostate cancer and their families. This clinical innovation showcases advancements in specialist nursing practice and care delivery focusing on quality and compassionate survivorship care for men and their families.
